Geography Of Haiti

While these were quite serious, there have been no reports since then against any cruisers. Cruising is best done from east to west as particularly during winter the strong trade winds make eastbound passages difficult. If going eastbound, cruisers normally do this along with the south coast as the north coast has more persistent swell from the Atlantic. French and a Creole dialect are official languages in Haiti. It is difficult to obtain accurate reports from Haiti and tourism there is quite limited. As a result little is known about some of these lighthouses, their condition, whether they are in operation, or even whether they still exist.

Yet many of the species that inhabit these waters are not well documented. Haiti Ocean Project is a non-profit organization based in Petite-Rivière-de-Nippes, in the most southwestern region of Haiti.

This post is one of a series on projects supported by the Anderson Cabot Center’sMarine Conservation Action Fund. Through MCAF, we support researchers, conservationists, and grassroots organizations around the world as they work to address the most challenging problems facing the oceans. A joint initiative from DonorsChoose and The Allstate Foundation offers individuals and groups opportunities to help bridge racial gaps in the classroom.

Insular ecosystems are very fragile and once altered it is difficult for them to revert to their original state. Both land and aquatic fauna in this ecoregion are also of great biological value. In the wetter areas, we find amphibians like the "maco pempém" and endemic "bufónido" . In drier areas, we find various reptiles, with two species of iguana (Cyclura spp.), 25 species of lizards (Anolis spp., Ameiva spp., Aristelliger cochranae, and others) and 13 species of snakes (Epicrates spp., Uromacer catesbyi, and others). Of the two iguana species, Cyclura ricordi is critically at risk of extinction and lives only in this lake, in the Jaragua National Park. Also to be noted is the largest snake on Hispaniola Island is the Alsophis anomalus, which is only found in two other areas with insular geography.

It is an active tectonic fault clearly identified in the northern part of the island of Hispaniola . It is a fault of subduction, of East-West direction, of strong dynamism, responsible for the majority of the earthquakes occurring in the northern island part, off the north coast of the Haitian territory. One of the most humane trends in the past 30 years of American life has been the decline in greyhound racing. After hitting its peak in 1985, state laws have led to the closure of racetracks across the country. Since its inception, the Human Library has done nothing but expand.

The magnitude and complexity of the disaster are such that all major organisations need to deploy their most experienced disaster response staff and to make sure they are procuring, delivering and distributing what is needed as quickly as possible. This is a major test for all of us and we cannot afford to fail. So I ask you all to take a fresh hard look at what you are able to do in the key areas, and pursue a much more aggressive approach to meeting the needs. For instance, about 40 percent of displaced Haitians are still in need of transitional shelter. "Over 87,000 tarpaulins have been distributed along with over 17,000 family size tents," according to a situation report.

The situation in Haiti is unstable, supplies are very limited and cruising there should not be attempted for the time being. A State of Emergency was declared throughout the country following the assassination of President Moise on 7 July 2021. The Island of Ile-a-Vache is safe and charming. They are well acquainted with cruising boats and it is as good a cruising destination as any in the Tortuga island Caribbean. Going south through the Windward Passage at the west end of the south peninsula is Anse d’Hainault and then just around the corner Ile a Vache. Haiti now has two SSCA hosts, one on Ile a Vache and one on Ile a Gonave, an island about 30 miles west of Port-au-Prince.

"I had a theory that it could work because the library is one of the few places in our community where everyone is welcome, whether you're rich or poor, homeless or living in a castle, professor or illiterate," Abergel told CNN in a recent interview. "It's truly the most inclusive institution in our time." Schools are charged with providing a safe, nurturing and equitable environment for students and teachers. Supporting educators who are trying to create that environment by helping fund their racial equity projects is a good place to start.

These species groups are the subject of a monitoring network which focuses on the Canal de la Gonâve, a marine channel that extends along the inner southern peninsula of Haiti. It is clear that, thanks to the collective efforts of so many people and organizations, we have achieved a great deal. However, it is also clear that there remain major unmet humanitarian needs, particularly in critical areas such as shelter, other NFIs, and sanitation. It is expanding its marine turtle and mangrove reforestation/rehabilitation conservation activities and has been trying to fill the “Haiti gap” of information related to environmental issues for institutions such as WIDECAST and the IUCN.
